Alexander Dawson realizes safety benefits and reduces maintenance with LightEdison solution.

LightEdison and Go Solar collaborate to deliver ideal turn-key LED lighting package.

Challenge

Alexander Dawson School is a nurturing learning environment for children in preschool through grade eight. Low light conditions existed throughout the building exterior and parking areas. The problem was exacerbated by frequent lamp failures that were causing excessive stress on the maintenance crew and operations budget in attempts to keep up with repairs. Safety concerns were prevalent with leadership not only for student safety in the winter months, but also for faculty and staff safety during evening working hours.

Solution

LightEdison specified and installed 513 retrofit kits and 2 lamp replacements increasing light levels by over 15%; immediately improving safety and alleviating security concerns. A wide array of fixtures were addressed including shoebox parking lot fixtures, bollards, troffers, recessed cans, decorative sconces and ground mounted up lighting. By creating a cohesive design plan, color inconsistencies were corrected and a smooth integrated exterior aesthetic was created. With an operating life of over 20 years on most fixtures the unsustainable burden was lifted from the maintenance crews to maximize positive operational impacts and allow their resources to be focused back on other areas of the school. Overall lighting energy use was reduced by 71%, all while creating significant increases in illumination.

Results

Alexander Dawson School has avoided paying a net of $141,486 over the next 10 years and these benefits are marginal compared to the improvements in safety and security and improved maintenance efficiency that can now be realized.
